Probably anywhere in the US that has red dirt also has a Red Mountain. Glenwood Springs, CO, has a Red Mountain right on the edge of town with a great trail leading up to its ridge. This is where paragliders take off to soar over the town when the weather is favorable, and also where what the locals simply call "the cross" is--it's a pleasantly glowing not-too-big one, lit up at Christmas and Easter. The hike up Red Mountain is a pretty challenging one, but you can always take a break by walking for a bit on the slightly gentler sloping road that criss-crosses the trail, or you can give yourself an even more strenuous workout on the incredibly steep and long cuts up the switchbacks, which which by now are practically part of the official trail too.
